Hamilton, John (Jack) Hedley, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Valleyview Care Centre, Brandon, MB at the age of 94, one month and one day short of his 95th birthday. He is survived by his son David Hamilton (Lisa) and their sons Devin (Jeanine) and Ian, all of Brandon, MB and his daughter Anne Hamilton of Carman, MB and her daughter Jen Thiessen (Paul Fouasse) of Prince George, BC and step-sons Steve (Renae and family) of Vegreville, AB and Mike (Brandy Moxham and family) of Outlook, SK. Other surviving family members are sisters Jean Fillis of Burnaby, BC and Mary Maitland (Keith) of Calgary, AB, brother-in-law Frank Pachal of Calgary, AB as well as nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by his wife Isabel in 2008, sister Margaret Pachal of Calgary, AB, brother Bill and sister-in-law Kathleen Hamilton of Paris, ON and brother-in-law Bill and sister-in-law May Watson of Waskada, MB. Jack was the oldest son of the late George and Edna Hamilton. He was born in Brandon, MB on August 30, 1922. He worked in the wholesale grocery business in Brandon for 41 years. Jack served 3 ½ years with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles Regiment and was wounded twice in battles in Normandy, France, first on D-Day, June 6, 1944 and then at the Battle of Carpiquet Airport on July 4, 1944. In 2014, Jack received the Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour from the Government of France for his part in the liberation of France during the Second World War. Earlier this July, Jack received a Quilt of Valour in recognition of his contributions during WWII. Jack was a Life Time and Honorary Meritorious member of the Royal Canadian Legion Brandon Branch No. 3 and held many positions over the past 70 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served as an elder for many years. The Celebration of Jack's Life will take place at First Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. Arlene Robertson will officiate. Interment will take place in the Veterans' Section of the Brandon Cemetery, with his wife, Isabel. A reception will follow in Duncan Hall at First Presbyterian Church. The family extends their sincere thanks to Valleyview Care Centre for their excellent care of Jack during his time there.
