Obituary for Harley "Hal" George Pallister

Harley "Hal" George Pallister
We the family are sad to announce that Dad has taken the final step on his long and rewarding journey through life. He passed away peacefully on Thursday Nov. 15, 2018 with his family at his side. Harley was born in Portage la Prairie, January 5, 1928, the fifth of a family of two girls and four boys born to Harry and Jessie Pallister of the Edwin district. As an adult, Harley attained his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin, and in 1977 a Master of Education degree from the University of Alberta. His technical training in the 1950's included Heavy Duty and Automotive apprenticeships to Journeyman status. The next step was the successful operation of an International Harvester Farm Equipment and Volkswagen dealership in Carberry with his long time friend and business partner - Ralph Thomas. Harley then taught at the Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School for four years before joining the management team of Assiniboine Community College as Educational Development Officer for 22 years, from which he was retired in 1993. Harley was predeceased by his father Harry, 1991, his Centenarian mother in 1995, sister Beth in 1980, brother Carl in 1982, brother Bill in 1993, all of Portage, and brother John of B.C. in 1996, as well as numerous sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Surviving are his wife Marie (Nee McShannock) to whom he was married in May 1952, two daughters; Heather, Shannon (Greg) Leachman and one grandson Graeme Scott Leachman. Also surviving is his sister Jean Vankoughnet and nieces, nephews and their families of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. Several nieces and nephews and their families of Portage, Winnipeg, Fort Frances, Vancouver and Calgary also survive. Harley was a life-long member of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons since joining Assiniboine Lodge #7 in Portage in 1954; Master of Carberry Lodge #29 in 1968; and District Deputy to the Grand Master of Manitoba in 1995; joined the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Masons in Brandon in 1982 and was honored to receive his 33rd Masonic degree in September 1995. Harley made contributions to training and development in the third world with a year (1984-85) in the Republic of the Seychelles and Tanzania - and again in the Caribbean (1987-88) with periods in Barbados, Trinidad and Jamaica. Harley had been a lifelong member of the Central United Church of Canada having served on boards at Carberry and Brandon's Central United. He enjoyed gardening, his family and continued to involve himself in various educational pursuits as well as a lot of tennis, golf and photography. In accordance with Harley's wishes, following cremation, a private family graveside service has been held at the Brandon Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Masonic Memorial Foundation of Manitoba - 420 Corydon Ave Winnipeg, MB, R3L 0N8 or the Central United Church Building Fund of Brandon - 327 8th Street Brandon, MB, R7A 3X5.

Children hardly know or guess
the love their fathers can't express
With thoughts he seldom said aloud,
his heart is warm, his feelings proud
They do not fully understand
his wisdom and his guiding hand,
They do know each helpful word
holds love unspoken, hope unheard.
Yet as the busy years roll past,
they come to understand at last
The worries and the fears he knew
the problem times he pulled them through,
They finally learn the full extent
of what a father's love has meant
and realize how great it's been
To have a father just like him.
