Obituary for Patricia "Patty" Jean Phillips
Patricia (Patty) Jean Phillips born September 15, 1954 in Brandon, Manitoba passed away after a short, hard fought battle with pancreatic cancer on November 12th, 2018. Patty is survived by her Aunt Rena Cornish, Uncle Wendlin Brotzel, sister Bernice Finlay, sister Shirley (Harold) Slator and sister Linda (David) Ewald as well as nieces and nephews Doug (Hali) Finlay, Sandra (Bart) Gloor, Cameron (Lisa) Slator, Jason (Kim) Slator, Tammy (Shawn) Williams, Johnathan (Sydney) and Josh Ewald and also survived by great nieces and nephews Kaitlyn & Rylee, Donald & Jessica Slator and Melanie & Kelsey Gloor and Zane Finlay. Patty was predeceased by her parents Ruth & Gilbert Phillips, her companion Greg Richardson and Brother-in-law Keith Finlay.
Patty grew up in Rapid City and spent her spare time helping out with the family business, Gib's Service. She was a member of The Rapid City Stock Car Club with her best friend Debbie (Sibbald) Inglis. Eventually the stock car club led her to the demolition derbies around Manitoba. It was with impressed surprise and delight that her nieces & nephews would find out that she actually raced and smashed up cars.
Around this time, Patty, who was at the time working at Christies School Supply met Greg Richardson and they spent their days at Pelican Lake and Netley Creek areas, fishing, playing cards and just enjoying being with family. Greg passed away in 1985 after a difficult battle against cancer.
Now on her own in Winnipeg where she and Greg had moved a number of years ago, her sister Linda moved to Winnipeg to keep her company. Patty still worked for Christies School Supply Winnipeg Office and when they downsized found herself without work. Her brother-in-law Jack Richardson recommended her for an opening at Vipond Automatic Sprinkler Company, in December 1986. Patty quickly became a valued and respected member of Vipond and was loved by her coworkers. In 1992, Linda joined Patty at Vipond and they worked together for 22 years. In 2011 Patty received a gold pendent in recognition of her 25 years of service to Vipond Inc.
After a restructuring process at Vipond, Patty took some time off to spend time with her nephews and then in October of 2015, Patty began to work at BDR Services and she was a part of the BDR Family until her diagnosis. A thank you to all of the staff at BDR, especially David & Candace for the care and compassion they showed for Patty in the last couple of months.
Patty took great pride in all of her nephews and nieces but Johnathan and Josh were lucky enough to have her in their lives each and every day. She loved spending time with them going for walks, spoiled them like crazy on birthdays and at Christmas but they always knew it wasn't about the gifts - it was all about the special person who loved them dearly. She could sit for hours just watching them working on vehicles, playing video games, you could see the love for them in her eyes as she watched them. When Patty was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, Johnathan went to all of her doctor's appointments with her, looked after getting her to and from her surgery and then chauffeured her to all of her radiation treatments. Having him there was a huge comfort for Patty during this difficult time and it meant so much to her. Just remember boys she may not be on earth with you but you now have the best guardian angel you could ever hope for. She will be watching over each and every one of us.
Thank you to all who visited, friends, fellow coworkers from BDR, former coworkers from Vipond. Your visits gave Patty so much support and reminded her how fulfilled her life was and how many people cared for her. Unfortunately as her cancer was so aggressive not everyone managed to get a visit in but know that she was thinking of all of her friends and relatives with fondness. We would also like to thank all medical personnel who cared for her at Seven Oaks Hospital and HSC.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North on Saturday, November 17th, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Patty may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3E 0V9 or to a charity of choice.

Thank you deeply for the heartfelt expressions of sympathy given to us during this difficult journey. We are stronger because of you. We mourn deeply but we know Patty would want a smile on our face and get on with our living.
