Obituary for Ernest "Ernie" Edward Tayler

Ernest "Ernie" Edward Tayler
With profound sadness, the family of Ernest Edward Tayler announces his passing, in Brandon, on Tuesday, August 28, 2018. Ernie endured a long battle with dementia, the last six years being in Rideau Park Personal Care Home with his final days in Palliative Care in the Assiniboine Centre. Ernie was born in Killarney, Manitoba, on March 12, 1936, to loving parents, Edward and Connie Tayler. He was raised on the family farm, "Holmdale", and attended schools in Fairdale, Holmfield, and U of M. His career with the Federal Government started at the Brandon Experimental Farm, then to the Winnipeg Experimental Farm, and in September of 1957 he accepted a transfer to the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa. Ernie left the government for the private sector, but returned in 1963, working for the National Employment Service, in Ottawa, Kirkland Lake, and then Brandon. In August of 1957, Ernie married Gail Neufeld. While in Ottawa, daughters Bev and Brenda were born; son Jim was born in Toronto. Ernie loved to read. Historical novels were his favourites, which likely was the impetus for him to put together a chronological history of his Hill and Tayler families from 1899 to the present. Travel took Ernie and Gail to visit every province, every U.S. state, over 30 countries, 2 riverboat cruises, 10 ocean liner cruises, camping with their children from coast to coast, as well as taking their grandchildren on their own special vacations. Ernie loved ice cream, good food, and good wine. He took several wine tasting courses to learn what different types should taste like. Then he began making his own wine from fruit, honey, and grape wine kits. In 1982, Ernie became the first private-practice Marriage Commissioner for Manitoba which led to him performing over 700 marriages. Intrigued with the concept of using treated wood for basement walls instead of concrete, he used this idea for a duplex he designed and had built. It was the first of its kind in Manitoba generating a lot of press. In years to follow Ernie bought, renovated, rented and eventually sold six more houses. Part of Ernie's job was the settling of new government sponsored immigrants and finding work for them. Most rewarding for him was working with the boat people from Vietnam and experiencing their genuine gratitude. Our family is proud to say that many of those families became, and still are, our friends. Ernie and Gail planned and worked towards their goal to retire at 55. Goal achieved: Ernie announced his retirement to his family at his 55th birthday party and, to his surprised co-workers the following morning. Although Ernie's journey with dementia was a long one, his family are forever grateful that his personality never changed. He remained a gentleman. Ernie lived by what he believed: "Do the right thing, because it is the right thing." Left to mourn is Gail, his wife of 61 years; daughters Bev (Jack) Haverstock, Brenda (Darrell) Appelt; son Jim; grandchildren Trevor (Kim) Appelt, Kim Lamb, Nicki Haverstock, and Jenna Haverstock; great granddaughter Jessica Gail Lamb; sister Vera Butterworth and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. To Honour a life well-lived, a Memorial Reception with a Time of Reflection will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2018 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North. A private interment in the family plot at Holmfield Cemetery will take place at a later date.
