Obituary for Fairlie Parker

Fairlie Parker
PARKER: Fairlie (Faye) Merle was born on Granny and Grandpa’s farm (Ethel & Rupert Barber) at Underhill, Manitoba on January 16, 1941. She passed away after a brief illness at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Tuesday May 8, 2018 at the age of 77. Fairlie was the eldest child of Lloyd and Vivian Cochrane. She grew up on the family farm and attended school in Fairfax, Manitoba. At the age of 17 she attended Wheat City Business College in Brandon, Manitoba, in later years she took two years of geology at Brandon University. She lived for a while in Thompson and Winnipeg. In 1968, she moved to Saskatoon and started working at the Dog & Suds Drive-In, this is where she met and worked with her beloved husband Keith. In December 1971, Fairlie and Keith opened their first restaurant together in Vanscoy, Saskatchewan. From there they moved to Lanigan, Saskatchewan where they ran a Texaco Restaurant, then on to Broadview, Saskatchewan where they ran an Esso Restaurant. On April 1, 1976 they purchased the Swiss Coffee House in Brandon, Manitoba. It was in Brandon that Fairlie and Keith married on June 25, 1976. In 1979, they renovated their business and renamed it Parker’s Restaurant. For 19 years Parker’s Restaurant was a very popular place for a great meal. In 1995, they sold the restaurant and Fairlie retired. However, retirement for Fairlie meant keeping as busy as possible. She worked for Del-Rich Service from 1995-2000 as a bookkeeper, Patmore’s Nursery from 2000-2007 and then Grower Direct. She also volunteered her time to many organizations. She was still volunteering up until March of this year. Fairlie and Keith loved to travel, taking trips all across Canada, the US and Europe. She was most happy when she was spending time with family & friends – entertaining, cooking meals (Soup & Hot Dog Day), camping, gardening, shopping, and helping wherever needed. She never forgot to send a card to people she knew for their special occasions. Fairlie is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Keith Parker; sisters Darlene (Glen) Rose and Delma Cochrane (Richard Schraeder); brother Jack Cochrane; a very special aunt, Donalda Neufeld who was like a sister; her four children, Robert Minary, Colleen Minary (Wayne Spence), Sharon Willsie (Zolton Hungler) and Ron Minary (Charlyn Mitchell & their daughter Jena); her adopted grandchildren – Bob Routledge, Shawn Routledge (Elysia Leochko & their son William), Chris McDonald, Kevin McDonald (Emily and their children Roland & Aveline), as well as their parents Bill & Norma Routledge. She will also be lovingly remembered by her nieces, nephews, their spouses and children, cousins, and many special friends. Fairlie was laid to rest in a private graveside ceremony at the Hartney Cemetery on Friday, May 11, 2018. Rev. Doug Craig of Central United Church officiated. Donations in memory of Fairlie may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 415 1st Street, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 2W8, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, #3-2430 Victoria Avenue, Brandon, Manitoba R7B 0M5 or the Manitoba Lung Association, 301-1 Wesley Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 4C6.
