Obituary for Donald Edward "Don" Forsberg

Donald Edward "Don" Forsberg
With heavy hearts and also with gratefulness and appreciation for a life well lived, the family of Donald Edward Forsberg, loving husband of Lois and much-loved father of Neil Forsberg and Lisa Birch, announce his passing at age 92, on March 27, 2018 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Don was born in Broderick, Saskatchewan on January 16, 1926, and grew up on the family farm, which was located alongside the South Saskatchewan River near the towns of Dunblane and Macrorie. He attended a one room school house, West Point School, and boarded in Elrose, Saskatchewan in order to complete Grade 12. He was encouraged to apply and entered the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon where he received his Master's Degree in Agriculture (Plant Science) 1951. While at university, he was active and played a number of sports including basketball, baseball and football and excelled at hockey and skating. Don played hockey for several years with the U. of S. Huskies, and was then drafted by the Detroit Red Wings, where a highlight was playing alongside Gordie Howe. In the same year, after graduation, Don married Lois Elliott of Forgan, Saskatchewan, and they remained happily together, for nearly 67 years. Their two children, Neil Elliott and Lisa Dawn were both born in Wilkie, Saskatchewan and the family lived in Scott, a small prairie town where Don worked at The Dominion Experimental Farm. In 1962, the family moved to Winnipeg where Don began his career as Research Director for the Velsicol Chemical Corporation. Following this, he joined Manitoba Crop Insurance in Winnipeg, was relocated to Portage la Prairie, and finally retired in 1990 and moved to Brandon, Manitoba in 1991. In all of these endeavours, Don was known as a person of integrity, was highly respected for his professionalism and hard work, and formed many long-lasting friendships. The family enjoyed many adventures together, early trips to Disneyland and Expo 67, outdoor camping and boating, visits with family back home and further west. Don and Lois also had much opportunity to travel, exploring Canada, coast to coast, meeting family in Sweden, England, Scotland and Malaysia, experiencing Japan, Bali, Hong Kong, the Caribbean, Oregon, Hawaii and other destinations. Don was a man who appreciated nature, whether working in the garden, or observing birds and the seasons as they passed by. He was an excellent carpenter, and built our house in Scott with the help of friends. His interest in woodwork started at a young age, and during retirement he took great pleasure in wood-carving, specializing in birds which were truly works of art. Photography was another interest and he documented our lives with many images of happy times together. He enjoyed the companionship of people, curled and played bridge where as recently as last fall, he and Lois won first prize in a local tournament. He was a man always willing to lend a hand, especially within the community. Don will be greatly missed by wife Lois; son Neil (Azizah Mohd), Amelia and Johan in Oregon; daughter Lisa Birch, Nathan and Jackie (Cooney), great-grandson Paul, Tanis and Tim (Brown), Marshall and Raquel (Garner); as well as by brother Harley, numerous nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Asser and Pearl (nee MacPherson) Forsberg of Outlook, Saskatchewan; brothers Lloyd and Jarl; sister Lovina Mclean; son-in-law Wayne (Ned) Birch; many aunts, uncles and cousins. A reception to celebrate Don's life was held Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at Memories Chapel in Brandon. Interment will take place at Lake Coteau Cemetery at Macrorie, Saskatchewan at a later date. Donations in memory of Don may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 2B3 or to a charity of choice.

Skate well Don, may the stars shine brightly, the music be sweet and the weather fine.
We will carry you with us as we continue on our journey
In our hearts now and forever.
