GWIAZDA: Roy, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at home (Rapid City), on Monday, December 4, 2017, at the age of 94 years. Born August 26, 1923 in Molson MB, Roy was the fifth child of Fredrick and Anne Gwiazda. He attended Molson School, and then ran the family farm in the Molson area until starting his career with CP Rail in 1943. Roy married Bertha Kozier in 1948. While living in Molson, they had two daughters, Debra and Janice. They called many places home; Molson, Oakbank, Transcona, Virden, and Minnedosa. The relocations were a result of his forty years of service with the railroad. Roy worked from Thunder Bay, ON to Bredenbury, SK. Summers often meant he was running tie gangs across Central Canada. He quickly became a foreman, eventually moved up to an Assistant Roadmaster; and finally served as Roadmaster, based out of Minnedosa. Bertha predeceased Roy in 1999, shortly after celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Travelling, woodworking, gardening, curling, skating, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends, were some of his many past times. Upon retirement in 1983, Roy added more activities to his days by golfing, driving the Handi-Van, delivering Meals-On-Wheels, volunteering as a Board Member and as a handy-man at Minnedosa United Church, and learning to downhill ski. As well as his love for skiing, he spent many enjoyable hours at Ski Valley helping Don Horner make snow. It was on the slopes at Ski Valley where he met Edie Evans. In 2003, Roy married Edie and moved to Rapid City and continued to enjoy his golf, bowling, skiing, vegetable and lily gardening, travelling, and playing cards at the Seniors Drop-In-Centre. Roy treasured his time spent with his daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all of the wonderful family that his marriage to Edie gave him. Visits from the younger generations always brought forth a big smile. Special times, meant you could find Roy and Edie together, enjoying the birds and wildlife in their little bit of paradise. Roy had a rich and full life and made his final life choices with dignity. A very special thanks to the MAID team for their kindness and support in his final days and at the end of his life. Roy’s memory will be cherished by his wife Eda Evans; daughters Debra Mason and Janice (John) Coulter; grandchildren Melissa Mason and Michael (Jen) Mason and their children Zachary and Zayden; step-children Rhonda (Daniel) vanHeyst, Lloyd (Joanne) Evans, Leigh (Dan) Mazier, and their families. Roy is also survived by one sister, Alice Brown of Toronto. The Celebration of Roy's Life took place at Memories Chapel on Friday, December 8, 2017. Rev. Milo Spooner Craig of Central United Church officiated. Roy was laid to rest in a private ceremony at the Minnedosa Cemetery. Donations in memory of Roy may be made to a charity of choice.
