Obituary for Verla Lillian Hartel

Verla Lillian Hartel
On Monday, October 30, 2017, Verla Hartel (nee Fleming), in her 96th year, passed away peacefully at Hillcrest Place Personal Care Home, Brandon. Verla is survived by her four children, Cheryle, Morley, Shelly and Darren and their spouses; grandchildren Brian, Suzanne, Andrew, Erika and Jackson and great-grandchildren Adriana, Alexandra, Noah, Harry and Sophie. She was predeceased by her parents Gib and Annie Fleming (nee Jones), her husband of 69 years Earl, and grandson Aaron. Earl and Verla were married November 20, 1947 and farmed at 2-3-23 east of Deloraine. In 1967, they moved into Deloraine, and then in 1989, relocated to their home on Aberdeen Avenue in Brandon. During her spare time Verla enjoyed curling, softball, quilting, knitting, crocheting and gardening. Her flower gardens were her pride and joy. Earl and Verla enjoyed old time dancing and other activities at Central Community Center in Brandon. In the summer they liked camping at Clear Lake and other campgrounds in the Brandon area. Earl and Verla took several trips to the Black Hills, Minneapolis, baseball games, and various places in the Rocky Mountains, both on their own and with other family members. Family was especially important to Earl and Verla. They attended many activities their children and grandchildren were involved in and always looked forward to the family gatherings at Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving. The family would like to thank the staff at Hillcrest Place for the special care they provided for both Verla and Earl over the past few years. Cremation has taken place, and a private family interment will be held at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Verla may be made to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200 17th Street East, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 7M6 or to a charity of choice.
