Obituary for Gary James Jonasson

Gary James Jonasson
Gary James Jonasson
July 30, 1941 - June 26, 2017

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved brother Gary at the Hillcrest Place Personal Care Home in Brandon, MB on Monday, June 26, 2017. Gary is lovingly remembered and survived by his sisters Geraldine, Beverley and Maryann; his special cousin Stanley and wife Barbara (to whom we are so grateful for their many visits to Brandon spending time with Gary), along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his brothers Charles and Kenneth; father Gestur; uncle Leifur; his special aunt Lily and uncle Kris who raised him as their own when he was a young boy and also his cousin Ethel and husband Steve. Gary was a special, kind human being and a true gentleman. His strength, courage and faith in God sustained him throughout a lifetime of deep suffering with mental illness. Despite his illness, he still maintained a sense of humour and interest in his family by typing/writing letters to us, reading, learning to play guitar, listening to music (favourite hymn "How Great Thou Art"), lifting weights, and going out to restaurants for his favourite breakfast, Bacon & Eggs. The family would like to express gratitude and thank you to the staff at Hillcrest Place Personal Care Home for their care and compassion of Gary over the past several years. Also, a special thank you to all the Social and Mental Health staff involved in Gary's care over the years and to the Green and Wright families where Gary resided before he entered Hillcrest. A private family service will be held to honour Gary's life at a later date. Donations in memory of Gary may be made to the Schizophrenia Society of Manitoba, 100-4 Fort Street, Winnipeg MB R3C 1C4.

"Mental Illness is not a weakness of character
but rather an experience
that requires the strongest of character"

"Goda Nott" dear Gary
