Obituary for Brian Josephson

Brian Josephson
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Brian Algot Josephson at sunrise on Tuesday, July 4, 2017, in Brandon with his children by his side, after a brief, courageous battle with cancer. Brian was born in Ceylon, SK to Mary and Carl Josephson. Along with his twin brother and closest friend Alvin Josephson, Brian grew up the youngest of five siblings including his sister Lorraine (Korf) Smith and brothers Lorne Korf and William Korf. The family lived in Brooking, SK until age 5, when they moved to Estevan where Brian attended school until grade 9. Brian moved to Weyburn where he completed high school, and then to Brandon, MB where he received his Bachelors of Arts and Education degrees at Brandon University. Brian was a sportsman, playing hockey as Weyburn high school senior team goalie, and senior league baseball well into his 20’s. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Patricia Cornell. On August 15, 1964, Brian married Pat and they cherished 39 years together. Brian was famous for his calm, patient demeanor and for greeting everyone with his warm smile and open ear, which became Brian’s trademark throughout his career as a junior high teacher. Brian taught at Linden Lanes, Earl Oxford and finally Harrison, where he retired early to take care of Pat as her health concerns grew. Brian shared a special relationship with his beloved granddaughter Danielle. She spent much of her time playing at “Grandma and Grandpa’s”, but mainly by Grandpa’s side, embraced by his love and support as he accompanied her to each and every activity. In retirement, Brian could be found at his post above section 3 where he served as an Usher at Brandon Wheat Kings hockey games. He loved the games, the people, and the comradery of his fellow Ushers and game night staff. Brian also spent time as a taxi cab driver in part to make some extra money, but mostly to meet and visit with new people. Summer Saturday mornings, Brian could be found at any number of yard sales where he searched for a good deal, and things that family, friends and neighbors might find useful. Brian was a movie aficionado, taking in most of the movies Brandon had to offer, often several times a week. Brandon University’s Evans Theatre will present a movie night in honor and memory of Brian this October. Brian knew that he was not long to this world and made the most of his final weeks with impromptu family reunions and visits with friends. His family is comforted in knowing that Brian left this world with nothing left unsaid. As inscribed on his headstone, Brian believed that Life is not forever, but Love is. Brian is survived by his daughter Tammy (Grant) McKay and son Terry Josephson (Mary Bertone), his grandchildren Danielle (Jacob) Geddes, Nicholas Josephson and Julianna Josephson, his first great-grandson Maxwell Geddes, who turned 1 on the day of Brian’s passing, and his twin brother Alvin (Janice) Josephson. Brian will also be sorely missed by his mother-in-law Audrey Cornell and family members Don (Carol) Cornell, Linda Petry, who all met for “Breakfast Club” family brunch every Sunday at Audrey’s, Betty (Lorne) Korf, as well as several nieces and nephews from southern Saskatchewan and Alberta. A Celebration of Brian’s Life took place at Memories Chapel on Friday, July 7, 2017. Mike Waddell officiated. Speakers honoring Brian were: Alvin Josephson and Terry Josephson. Interment followed at Brandon Cemetery where he was reunited with his beloved wife and soul mate Pat. Pallbearers were Elmer Kurtz, Bruce Black, Curt Smith, Keith Smith, Kevin Smith, Kelly Smith, Chris Petry and Bryan Petry. Brian’s family would like to express their gratitude to the wonderful staff of the Assiniboine Centre’s Palliative Care Unit for their compassion and guidance in supporting us during this challenging time, and in helping Brian find his peace. Donations in memory of Brian Josephson may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation for Palliative Care, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 2B3.
