Obituary for Marguerite Marie Hersack

Marguerite Marie Hersack
On Friday, June 9, 2017, Marguerite Marie Hersack, in her 96th year, widow of the late Thomas Hersack and mother to Rick, Wayne and Cherie, passed away at the Bayside Personal Care Home, Killarney, Manitoba. Marguerite was born in Treherne, Manitoba, on July 18, 1921, the eldest of three children to Cecile and Jean Baptiste Moreau. Treherne was home until she graduated high school, then in 1939 she moved to Brandon to complete a three year psychiatric nursing program at the Brandon Mental Health Centre. This is where she learned to be compassionate, loving and very dedicated to those whom, without her help would not have found life as bearable. She found her lifelong passion, nursing. She also found the love of her life, Tom Hersack, who worked with her at BMHC. They were married in 1943, but their new life was interrupted by the war. They both spent time overseas, Marguerite as a registered nurse with the St. John's Ambulance Brigade. They returned to Brandon in 1946, and through the Veteran's Land Act, bought a small parcel on Manitoba Avenue to start their family of three children, Rick, Wayne and Cherie. They were also foster parents, providing love and support to many other children over the years. Marguerite's nursing career spanned almost 40 years, retiring in 1978. Still, she remained active serving a full term on Brandon's City Council. Through all those years she instilled that same compassion, dedication and love for life in all her endeavors. In retirement Marguerite and Tom enjoyed many trips to visit their children and grandchildren. Most memorable were trips to Baker Lake, NWT to visit Rick's family and the trip in their motor-home to the east coast. Unfortunately Tom passed away in 1989, leaving Marguerite far too early in life, but she learned that no matter how much your heart breaks, the world does not stop for your grief. In later years she took an Alaskan cruise and spent holidays in Victoria visiting her sister and her granddaughter's family. She got a rose tattoo for her 80th birthday and at 88 took a trip to London and Paris. Through all this she battled cancer and hip replacement surgery but there was just no stopping Marguerite. In 2006, she moved from her beloved house in Brandon to be closer to her daughter in Killarney, where she was able to manage a new house on her own for the next 9 years. She then moved to an assisted living apartment at 94. She was an inspiration to everyone she knew, few people in their nineties can walk to the post office every day. Marguerite loved music, she never tired of her Big Band Era favorites. They were played loudly so you could sing and dance alongside. It was another gift she gave to her family, a passion for music. Although she passed away peacefully in her sleep the music will continue playing and her love, passion and "Joie de Vivre" will be forever in our hearts. Marguerite will be forever missed by her sons Rick (Roxanne) and Wayne (Tammy) and daughter Cherie (Wilson). Grandchildren Andrea, Aarin, Patrick, Joel (Samantha), Matthew, and Elliott (Kristel). Great grandchildren Samantha, Oscar, Reed, Mercedes, Jaxson, Kaelyn, Anthony, and Olivia. She was predeceased by her husband and parents, brother George, sister Irene and brother-in-law John Barnard. The Funeral Service will take place at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North, on Friday, June 16, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. with Lydia Glawson officiating. Marguerite will be laid to rest beside her husband at the Brandon Cemetery. A reception will follow at Memories Chapel. Donations in memory of Marguerite may be made to a charity of choice.
