Jan "John" Dekker
The death of Jan "John" Dekker, occurred on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at Fairview Home. Jan was born March 23, 1920 at Hoogeveen, Netherlands and immigrated to Canada in April, 1951. His first year in Canada was spent in Oberon, Manitoba working on Frank May's farm and then in 1952, Jan and his family (wife Grietina and son Albert) moved into Brandon. Jan was educated in the Netherlands as a journeyman carpenter. While in Brandon he continued that profession working for Currie Manufacturing and North American Lumber. In 1966, he started work as the maintenance carpenter at the newly opened Manitoba Vocational Training Centre which was renamed Assiniboine Community College in 1969. Jan worked at ACC until his retirement in 1987. Jan was active in his church, First Christian Reformed and in 1967, he was instrumental in building the church's Canadian Centennial Project, Wayside Chapel. The chapel is still in use today and sits at the corner of Highway One and 18th Street North (Esso gas bar). Jan loved to build things, some of which included their existing home, lots of cabinetry, various camper trailers, many home renovation projects, a variety of sheds, decks, porches, tool boxes and even a number of hockey trophies. He was a great all around handyman. Jan spent many enjoyable weekends at the cabin in Minnedosa and for many years after his retirement was a avid walker; outside in spring, summer and fall, and inside at the Shoppers Mall in winter. Jan is survived by his wife Grietina with whom he spent a wonderful 72 married years and his children Tim (Susan), Ed (Leanne); grandchildren Brooke (Todd), Boyd, Kelsey, Kristin, Barry, and Jordan; great-grandchildren Kaleb, Rochelle, Adrian and Paige. Jan is also survived by his sister Tiny and brother Jim. He was predeceased by his son Albert and sister Gay. A private family graveside ceremony was held at the Brandon Cemetery on Wednesday, June 14, 2017.
