Obituary for Roselle Catherine "Rose" Caughell

Roselle Catherine "Rose" Caughell
CAUGHELL: Rose Catherine passed away on Friday, May 12, 2017 at the age of 76 years. She was born in Grandview, Manitoba on September 22, 1940. Rose is survived by her children: Matthew (Donna) Yurkiw, Theresa (Greg) Dunn, James Yurkiw, Lisa Yurkiw (George) and Katharine Yurkiw. Rose was the oldest daughter of six siblings. She is also survived by her brothers Ed (Mary) Kotyk and Sylvester Kotyk and two sisters: Lillian (Peter) Yakymchuk and Delores (Isadore) Lulashnyk. Rose will be missed by her five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Fred Kotyk (2014), her mother, Pearl Kotyk (2005) and her sister Barbara (1989). Rose was also predeceased by her husbands: Fred Yurkiw (1997), Wilfred Gratton (2006) and Thomas Caughell (2014). Rose grew up on a farm. She was a true nature lover and as a child she loved to go for long walks in the surrounding countryside, searching for all of the different flowers that grew wild in the area. Her love of nature and flowers continued throughout her life and she took great pride in her gardens that were filled with many different herbs and brilliant flowers. She cared deeply for all animals, always looking for wounded creatures that she could bring home and nurse back to health. Her love of animals continued throughout her life, especially her cats, caring for them as she would a child. Rose was also an ardent supporter of the Brandon Humane Society, the World Wild Life Fund and she wrote letters and signed many petitions asking our government to strengthen Canada's Animal Rights and Protection Laws. Rose loved music, singing and dancing. She had a beautiful voice and we all remember our home being filled with the sound of her singing throughout the day. Rose was also an artist and a poet and she left us volumes of poetry, writings, scrapbooks and sketches to enjoy and to keep her memory alive. Growing up on the farm, Rose worked side by side with her mother and grandmother, learning all of the skills that a "good Ukrainian girl" would need to care for a family. Every year, she planted a garden that could feed an army. In midsummer, she started canning and preserving and didn't stop until the last raspberry was jarred and the last cucumber was dilled. She cooked mountains of perogies, cabbage rolls, beet rolls and potato buns to make sure that her family would make it through the long prairie winters. The news of our mom's diagnosis two years ago devastated our family. The things that were most dear to our mother were slowly being stripped away from her one by one. Throughout her ordeal, she maintained her dignity, grace and sense of humour. Despite what was happening to her, she would still laugh at herself and come up with funny little jokes and quips to make other people laugh. Her compassion for others never left her. If she saw someone else who was having difficulties, or seemed lonely or afraid, she would still try to reach out to offer them comfort. Most importantly, she never lost her faith. Her trust in God and his plan for her life guided her always. On behalf of Rose’s family, we offer a heartfelt thank you to the outstanding staff at Hillcrest Place Personal Care Home and Dr. Egan for taking exceptional care of Mom. We would also like to extend a special thank you to Bernie Mullins, Sharon and Ryerson for your presence and prayers and also to Father Brent Kuzyk for your graciousness and service. A private family graveside service was held at the Brandon Cemetery on Thursday, May 18, 2017. Donations in Rose’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer Society, Unit 4B-457 9th Street, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 1K2 or the Brandon Humane Society, 2200 17th Street East, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 7M6.
