Obituary for Florence Mary Brown

Florence Mary Brown
BROWN: Florence Mary Brown (nee Milne) passed away suddenly on Monday, May 1, 2017 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre at age 87 years. Florence, the youngest of five daughters, was born December 24, 1929 to James and Sarah Milne of Newdale, Manitoba. She attended Newdale School until graduation. Florence then started work at the Royal Bank in Newdale. After her parents sold the farm and moved to Brandon, Florence continued working in Newdale, but in 1952 transferred to Brandon's Royal Bank and in later years (mid 1970's) worked at Stylerite Hardware with her sister Margaret. It was after moving to Brandon she met Allan Brown, a farmer from south of Brandon. Skating at the old "Wheat City Arena" she fell for Allan with his dashing good looks and devilish smile! They were wed November 6, 1954 and settled on the Brown family homestead, "Glencarnock Farm". There she was the hard working farm wife, cooking, gardening, helping anyway she could. Even with this she still was there to care for her parents as well as her in-laws. Florence was an excellent cook mastering the ever popular "Sour Cream Pie", baking treats which were taken to the men working in the fields. Florence was involved in many ventures such as Secretary/Treasurer for Cornwallis School, playing piano for many of the schools concerts. She was on the board of the Brandon and Area Planning District, Red Cross, Roseland Church UCW, Brandon Arthritis Support Group (one of the founding members), 4-H Leader, curled at Roseland Curling Club as well as with sisters Elsie, Margaret and Olive going to many Bonspiels. Florence was a 66 year member of the Rebekah Lodge joining in Newdale and then transferring to Naomi Lodge #6 in Brandon. She held many offices during this time such as passed Noble Grand, passed Assembly Chaplain, passed District Deputy President, etc. At the age of 49, Florence was stricken with Rheumatoid Arthritis, but with the various degrees of the disease she never gave up determined not to let it keep her from what she loved. Everyone knew her in her Goldfinch Yellow Ford. Florence loved to watch the "Blue Jays", being a baseball player herself in younger years, and she and Allan and family watched the "Wheat Kings" later listening to the play by play on the radio, never missing a game. After Allan's passing Florence moved to Fairview Home in 2015. There she had a "wave" and "Hello" for everyone, enjoying any entertainment and Bingo. Florence is survived by her daughter Linda Creighton of Brandon, grandsons Riley (Madison) of Winnipeg, Tyler (Shelley) of Winnipeg, and Brett (Hayley) of Brandon, son Bob (Sandy) and grandson Ali of Brandon; sisters Margaret Templeton of Brandon, Gertie Templeton of Brandon and Olive Templeton of Minnedosa, as well as sister-in-law Estella Brown of Brandon and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents James and Sarah Milne; her in-laws Robert and Jean Brown; uncles Robert and Alex Milne and Aunt Katerine Christie; brothers-in-law Hugh, Robert and Tom Templeton, Ben Wilson, Marshall and James Brown; sister Elsie Wilson and nephew Allister Wilson. The Ceremony to Celebrate Florence's Life took place at Memories Chapel on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 with Mr. Mike Waddell officiating. Pallbearers were grandsons Riley, Tyler and Brett Creighton, Ali Brown, nephew Jim Brown and great-nephew Mark Kingdon. A private family interment followed at the Brandon Cemetery. Donations in memory of Florence may be made to the Arthritis Society, 100A-1465 Buffalo Place, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 1L8.
