Obituary for Carolynne Peta Reed

Carolynne Peta Reed
Carolynne Peta Reed, passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2017, surrounded by her family, love and humour. Mum to her children, Nana to her grandchildren, and Lynne to her friends, Carolynne was born March 24, 1942 in Dinas Powys, Wales, UK. Mum grew up in Cardiff, Wales, and was schooled at Lady Margaret High School. A nonconformist with a great sense of humour, she was in her own words “wild as a monkey” growing up and “was a member of a motorcycle gang” in her youth. On an apparently puzzling whim, and obviously without first researching the Manitoba climate, Mum immigrated to Brandon, Manitoba on December 8, 1968 with then-husband Robert Reed, daughter Catherine, and her son Michael. A spare part child, Elizabeth was added to the family in 1971. Her career was always public facing. First as a Telephone Operator in Cardiff, a waitress at the Brandon North Hill Inn, a switchboard operator in Brandon General Hospital, and finally as a no-nonsense, badass Brandon City Police Dispatcher for 35 years. Mum enjoyed volunteering. She worked at CNIB, was active with the Brandon Welsh Society, and organized a wildly successful fund-raiser for a handicap transport van. Her interests were also varied, with gardening, knitting and aquasize as her hobbies and activities. Mum also enjoyed socializing with her many friends. Her cooking adventures were humourous and legendary, with many past meals still remaining in quarantine with Canada Health Services. Many thanks to Dr. Moller, Terry Nelson, Susan Dodds, all her close friends, and the Brandon Regional Health Centre Palliative team for keeping Mum’s spirits high and for always being there for her. Honorary pallbearers were requested; however, Sean Connery and Daniel Craig were unfortunately unable to attend in time. Mum was predeceased by her parents Samuel and Peggy Francis, and sisters Jackie Thomas and Denise Moll. She is survived by three children; Cathy Drakeley (Paul), Michael Reed (Amy) and Elizabeth Reed (Glen). Mum is also survived by a whole bunch of grandchildren; Sarah, Stephen, Garth, James, Megan, Christopher, Alexander, Grace, and one great grandchild, Liam. As per Mum’s very clear instructions, there will be no funeral or service. In lieu of flowers or cards, please instead send donations to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200 17th Street East, Brandon, Manitoba R7A7M6.

To quote Mum’s favourite expression “I’m fine!”
