Obituary for James Wallace Burney

James Wallace Burney
With great sadness the family of James "Jim" Wallace Burney, of Brandon, formerly of the R.M. of Cornwallis on Veterans Way, announce his passing on Monday, March 27, 2017 at Fairview Home. Jim was born April 15, 1923 in Deloraine, Manitoba to Gerald and Mildred Burney. He was the fourth of nine children. Due to the depression, at 5 years old, Jim was placed in the Salvation Army Home in Brandon along with his brother Les and sisters Doris, Margaret and Geraldine. He went to school at Parks and Central and attended church at the Salvation Army where he played the cornet (flugelhorn) in the band. At age 10, Jim went to the foster home of Roy and Edith De Jersey near Minnedosa and attended school at Bethany. Moving to Boissevain in his late teens, Jim started his journey in many trade including working for Phill Clark as an electrical helper, wiring farm buildings, truck driver for Hammond Transport and a line labourer for the CP Rail for 5 years. He married Phoebe Ann Burghart in 1947 and they had five children. In 1957, Jim moved to the Chater area where he built the family home at the corner of Chater Road and Veterans Way. After leaving CP Rail, Jim worked construction, prior to becoming a night watchman and cleaner at the T. Eaton store for 12 years. He moved on to be a mechanic at Morgan Motors and then received the contract for maintenance of grounds, boilers and buildings at the RCMP Brandon detachment for 12 years at which time he retired. While at the RCMP, Jim met his wife Doreen Bagnall and they had their daughter Carol. Jim had many hobbies and got great enjoyment from all of them. Each year he put in a beautiful garden, his last one when he was 89 years. He took meticulous care of his yards and liked to fish, camp and spent many hours watching the birds and deer in his yard. Jim's passion was golfing, which he started in 1959. He played in most tournaments in Westman and became the hottest commodity around Westman golf circles, even being referred to as "The Westman Sand Green King" by sports writers Bill Davidson and Bruce Penton. Jim won many trophies and prizes through the years. One of the trophies being the first Bing Crosby donated by Bing Crosby. This trophy was for the championship flight in 1970 at Moosomin golf course celebrating their new course with grass greens to which Jim adjusted his game very well. In 1973, Jim received a large beautiful trophy when he was voted "Sportsman of the Year" sponsored by the Brandon Sun and Gondola Pizza. Throughout his golfing stance Jim got two aces (holes-in-one). One was witnessed by his senior golfing buddies as he became a member of the Glen Lea Seniors Club and settled into a more pleasured pace instead of the grueling demands of competition. His living room is still filled with his numerous trophies, each with a story to tell. Jim is survived by his six children Doris, Larry (Brenda), Erwin, Lloyd (Penny), Lois, and Carol (Wes); many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Rose and Gladys as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and many great friends. He was predeceased by his precious daughter-in-law Kimberly (Kim) in 1993; his father Gerald, mother Mildred; siblings Doris, Les, Marg, Mildred, Geraldine, Ray, Edith and Stella. The Memorial Service will be held at Memories Chapel, 330 18th Street North, on Friday, June 30, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. with Lt. Kaitlin Adlam of the Salvation Army officiating. A reception will follow at Memories Chapel. Urn bearers are his sons Larry, Erwin and Lloyd. All in attendance are considered honourary pallbearers. Jim will be laid to rest at the Boissevain Cemetery, Boissevain, Manitoba. Donations in memory of James may be made to the Salvation Army - Brandon, Donation Processing Centre, P.O. Box 1932, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 3R2.
