Obituary for Donald Alexander Rose

Donald Alexander Rose
Donald Alexander Rose was born in Brandon on April 11, 1927. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, in his 90th year. Remaining to cherish Don's memory are his loving wife Maxine, sons Rob (Barb Balanyk) and Ken (Susan), grandchildren Arthur (Leslie) and Elizabeth (Jordan) Koch, and his precious great-granddaughter Isabelle Koch. He was predeceased by his parents Grant and Winnifred Rose, and his brothers Murray (Bev) and George (Ruth). Don and Maxine were married in 1949 in Brandon. April 14th would have been their 68th anniversary. Don was a long-time member of the Brandon Lions Club and served as treasurer for over 50 years. He was a charter member of the Brandon/Westman Ostomy Association of which he was also treasurer for many years. Don was an Elder and lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church. As a travelling salesman for Brandon Packers, Western Grocers, and Standard Brands, Don met and made many friends. He then worked as bookkeeper for Len's A.M. Motors before he retired. Once Rob and Ken had left home, Don and Maxine travelled to Scotland to see the castle of Don's ancestors, to Cuba, and vacationed in Victoria for several winters. Don spent many happy hours with family and friends at the cabin at Clear Lake over the years. In the late 70's Don and his son Rob worked together on "Rosie", a bright yellow '51 Chevy sedan delivery which was well known around town. "Rosie" served Don and Maxine well for three and a half decades, taking them to Montana, northern Saskatchewan, the Black Hills, and Minneapolis for "Back to the 50's". Through these trips and the many car shows they attended even more good friends were made. While Ken and his family lived in Weyburn, Don enjoyed the special individual holidays Arthur and Elizabeth each spent with him and Maxine every summer. His last Christmas spent with great-granddaughter Isabelle brought him much joy. Don will always be remembered as a loving and considerate husband, an awesome dad, grandfather, great-grandfather and a faithful friend. A Celebration of Don's Life took place in the Kirkland Hall of the First Presbyterian Church on Friday, March 24, 2017. Arlene Robertson officiated. A private graveside service will be held in the Brandon Cemetery at a later date following Don's last ride in "Rosie". Special thanks to the staff of A2 at the Assiniboine Centre for their wonderful care and compassion. Donations in memory of Don may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, Unit 1, 452 Dovercourt Drive, Winnipeg, MB R3Y 1G4 or the Ostomy Canada Society, 5800 Ambler Drive, Suite 210 Mississauga, ON L4W 4J4.
