Obituary for Ruth Mary Nelson

Ruth Mary Nelson
Ruth Mary Nelson of Brandon, Manitoba passed away peacefully at the Valleyview Care Centre on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at the age of 91 years. She was born on September 23, 1925 in the Boulton Municipality to Adolph and Mary Ziprick. She was the fifth child born into a family of six children which included her brothers Louis, Lawrence, and Norman, as well as her sisters Martha, and Elsie. Ruth married John Nelson on August 11, 1951, and just recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary together. On May 14, 1953, Ruth and John were blessed when their precious twins, Beverley and Brian were born. This would start the annual tradition of the twins celebrating their birthday with their father, an event that Ruth would look forward to each and every year. Ruth was a very kind and very giving individual. Throughout her life, she held various jobs that were in a line of work where she was helping others. She worked at the "S & N" grocery store owned by her brother-in-law Monte Schappert, as well as John and Ruth. She also worked at "Larry's Grocery" and "Norm's Grocery" which were owned by her brothers. She did housecleaning for a number of years as well. Ruth's last place of employment was at the "Dinsdale Nursing Home", where she worked in the kitchen and dining room. Ruth had many interests and hobbies in her 91 years. She had a green thumb, and liked to garden. She had many beautiful flowers and plants all over their house at 236 Victoria Avenue. She also had a vegetable garden where she would grow peas, carrots, and of course cucumbers for her famous Dill Pickles that she would make. Ruth also loved to cook and bake. She was very popular with her famous recipe for her pie crust that could never be duplicated. Christmas was also a VERY important time of the year for her, with her involvement with Calvary Temple's Singing Christmas Tree, which she sang in the very first one back in 1974, up until she retired from singing in the 1990's. She also sang in the church choir for many years. Ruth was also very active in the church over the years, and even taught Sunday school for many years. She had a very strong relationship with the church, and more importantly with God. Ruth also loved to knit and crochet over the years, and made many beautiful afghans, and doilies for her family. She loved to go bowling every week with her friends. In her later years, Ruth acquired a keen interest for the game of hockey, and became a season ticket holder along with her husband John for the Brandon Wheat Kings for a number of years. There were a couple of memorable trips that meant a lot to Ruth. There was a trip to BC with her son Brian and his wife Cheryl, where they met up with family and relatives, and made a lot of wonderful memories. Then there was the fishing trip to Burntwood Lake Lodge for John's 75th birthday, where she was more excited to be out on a boat catching fish than her husband was. She would reminisce about both those trips for years to come. Family was very important to Ruth, from her early years with her sisters and brothers, and later on to when she got married and started her own family with John. But the moments she treasured as years went by were the time she spent with her grandchildren, and more recently with her great-grandchildren. Ruth was predeceased by her parents, Adolph and Mary Ziprick; her brother Louis Cipryck; sister-in-law Beatrice Cipryck; brother Lawrence Ziprick; her sister Martha Klimach; brother-in-law Alvin Klimach; "special" niece Judy Klimach; sister Elsie Schappert; and brother-in-law Monte Schappert. Ruth is survived by her husband of 65 years John Nelson; her daughter Bev (Don) Webber; her son Brian (Cheryl) Nelson; grandchildren Steve (Jennifer), Matt (Shauna) and Pam; great-grandchildren Marcus and Preston, and Benjamin and Olivia. Ruth is also survived by her youngest brother Norman (Noreen) Ziprick, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family. A Celebration of Life service took place at Memories Chapel on Sunday, December 11, 2016, officiated by Pastor Gary Jennings. A private interment took place on December 12, 2016 at Danvers Cemetery, RM of Clanwilliam, Manitoba. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Large and the staff at Valleyview Care Centre for the utmost care Ruth received during her five years at Valleyview. Donations in memory of Ruth may be made to a charity of choice.
