Obituary for George "Scotty" Queen Kirk

George "Scotty" Queen Kirk
The family of George "Scotty" Queen Kirk, widower of Myra (nee Harrold) Kirk, are saddened to announce his passing on Friday, December 2, 2016, at the Brandon Regional Health Centre, after a short and sudden illness. George was born April 30, 1932 in Glasgow, Scotland to Elizabeth and Robert Kirk. As a young man he worked as a fireman on steam fired trains as well as assisting in his father's barber shop. He joined the Glasgow Fire Brigade in the early 1950s and while employed there met the love of his life Myra, a fireman's daughter. Dad's career with the fire service continued into the Royal Air Force until his transfer to the Royal Canadian Air Force with his first posting to Downsview, Ontario. It was while stationed there that he and Mom became engaged via mail and the rest is history with their marriage in Glasgow on January 4, 1956. Dad and Mom enjoyed postings to Grostenquin France (where his daughter Yvette was born in 1958), Langar England, Winnipeg Manitoba (where son Jeff was welcomed in 1963), Edmonton Alberta, Rivers Manitoba, Lahr Germany, and back to Winnipeg before Dad ended his military career in 1980 with a short posting back to Downsview where it all began. He also spent a year away from his family in 1963 with a posting to Resolute Bay NWT. In 1980, Dad became the Deputy Fire Chief at Canadian Forces Base Shilo where he proudly served until his retirement in 1994. Not one to sit idle, he then worked as Storesperson at General Strange Hall until he finally decided it was time to enjoy a full retirement. Even after his retirement he was able to use his life saving skills when he tended to a tradesperson working at his home who was electrocuted. For that life saving action he was awarded the St John Ambulance Life Saving Award by the Lt Gov of Manitoba. Dad was a dedicated caregiver to Mom for five years when she became afflicted with Alzheimer's Disease and when she was taken into care, he visited her on a daily basis. He was heartbroken beyond words at her passing in 2009. Dad was an avid golfer and curler for many years, taking in international bonspiels and tournaments throughout Europe and Canada, many years skipping a team at the Johnnie Walker spiels. He was conspicuous in his Air Force blue golf cart which was dubbed "Air Force One" and got plenty of teasing from his many "brown job" Army pals. He and Mom loved their time in Europe and toured extensively while there often towing their camper. It was during their time in Lahr Germany that they were able to reconnect with family in Scotland and England and spent many holidays in the UK. George is survived by his children Yvette Kirk and husband Mike McEwan of Shilo, their children Braedon (partner Taylor) of Kitchener ON and Logan Sharpe of Brandon MB; his son Jeff Kirk and wife Faith of Coldwater ON and their children Kristy of Bracebridge ON and Jeffrey (partner Megan and daughter Ava) of Barrie ON; his sister Betty of Egremont, England and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews in Scotland and England. He was predeceased by his parents Elizabeth & Robert Kirk and his brother Bobby. Beloved wife Myra left Dad's side on September 18, 2009 and his constant companion dog Jock preceded him December 1, 2016. They will both be anxiously awaiting Dad to join them. The family wish to thank the professional and caring staff of the Brandon Regional Health Authority for tending to Dad during his illness and passing - the Paramedic staff who answered our call and ensured Dad's safe and timely arrival at ER, the ER doctors and nurses as well as the staff on the third floor. To Dr Seitz and med student Jay, we appreciate your bedside manner and comfort. To the caring staff at the Assiniboine Centre third floor Tiffany, Tamara, Carolyn, to name a few - your compassion and care to Dad and his family was so welcomed at such a sad and trying time. You made Dad's passing comfortable and dignified and allowed his family the assurance that he was well cared for. And to the We Care staff who sat long hours when his family were not at his side, we thank you. It allowed us to tend to ourselves and Dad's affairs. The Funeral Service took place at St. Barbara's Chapel, CFB Shilo, on Tuesday, December 6, 2016. Padre Dave Wilson officiated. A time of fellowship was held at the CFB Shilo Officers Mess following the service. Donations in George's honour may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 415-1st Street, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 2W8 or to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba, Unit 4B-457 9th Street, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 1K2.

We love you Dad and Grandpa and will miss you beyond words.
