Obituary for Donald Jerome Gray

Donald Jerome Gray
Donald Jerome Gray, husband of Shirley Gray, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2016. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Shirley, two daughters, Shauna (Gil Magat), Lake Simcoe, ON, Barbara (Darell Naismith), Winnipeg; three grandsons, Codey Gray, Brandon, Brayden Gray, Winnipeg, Diego Magat, Lake Simcoe; one sister Pat Allen, Winnipeg. He was predeceased by a daughter in infancy, Katherine Dawn. Don was born August 5, 1940 to John L. (Les) and Pat Gray. He grew up on the family farm on Grand Valley Road, attending school in Brandon. Don took up farming with his Dad at an early age and continued until 1978. Don married Shirley Fox from Portage in 1964 and they started married life on the family farm. Don always took pride in the farm home and grounds, and with Shirley’s help the place was always kept well groomed, with wonderful shows of flowers and great landscaping. In 1978 Don and Shirley bought the Country Style Donut Franchise at 10th Street and Victoria Avenue in Brandon. The business closed in 1998 after a successful run of 20 years and the Grays retired. Don’s love of travel took him to 50 countries on five continents over the years. Hostelling around the world, meeting people and making friends was a great joy for him. Shirley, not as enthusiastic a traveller as Don, did not stand in the way of his interest and desire to see the world. Don was a family man, taking his role as Father and Grandfather seriously. Many happy hours were spent with his grandsons, grandpa teaching them how to play cards, ride bikes, shoot a gun safely, to name a few. One of Don’s proudest moments was when he finally taught his eight year old grandson how to ride a 2-wheeler. Don loved family and stayed connected with cousins, friends and relatives scattered around the world, special friends Theo and Lettie Van Niekirk, Heidleberg, South Africa. It is Don’s request that there will be no formal funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Don’s memory, to CancerCare Manitoba.
