Obituary for Lloyd Nerbas

Lloyd Nerbas
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lloyd Leonard Nerbas. He passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on Saturday, September 17, 2016 with his loving family by his side.

Lloyd was born on May 11, 1930 in Shellmouth, MB. His family had moved to a farm South of Kenville when he was young and he attended both the Davidson Country School and the Kenville School. In 1957, he moved to Winnipeg and proudly graduated from the accounting program at MIT. He received his first professional accounting position at Braemar Homes. In 1965, he accepted a position with the Dept. of Indian & Northern Affairs and spent a year and a half in Island Lake before moving back to work in Selkirk and Winnipeg. He later transferred to the Brandon Research Centre in 1972 where he provided dedicated service until his retirement in 1993.

On May 11, 1963, Lloyd received an incredible birthday gift that kept on giving... he wed Bernice who became his loving and devoted wife of 53 years. Together they had two sons, Kenneth and Timothy, and a life full of happiness. Lloyd and Bernice travelled far and wide, including 3 trips to Norway and a trip to Germany for World Curling - which was a highlight for him because he was able to take a short side trip to Austria, the homeland of his father. There were several bus tours throughout both Canada and the US and even a few Las Vegas trips along the way.

We fondly remember Lloyd as a strong, intelligent, humorous and kind-hearted individual who cared deeply for his loved ones and community. Lloyd was an active volunteer with his sons' hockey and baseball. For many years he was involved with the Westridge Community Centre. He was also a long time volunteer with the City of Brandon's Tournament of Champions and in 1994 humbly accepted the "Outstanding Volunteer" award. Lloyd loved hockey and fostered the love of the sport in his boys. During the 1980's and 1990's he sharpened many pairs of skates, both for local hockey players and during special events at the Keystone Centre. In 2006 he was instrumental in bringing the Citizens on Patrol Program (COPP) to Brandon. Lloyd was a true Montréal Canadiens fan. He never wavered in his support through their winning and losing seasons. In spite of making the courageous choice to amputate his leg in his 20's, Lloyd was never deterred and he frequently told others that it was, "the best decision I ever made". In fact, he even used his prosthetic as a party prop or punch line on more than a few occasions. His strength, laughter, warmth and caring nature will sing in our hearts forever. For that we thank him, "Break a leg in heaven Lloyd!"

Lloyd was predeceased by his parents, Jake & Philipena Nerbas, his brothers Ben (& Eva) and Frank, a nephew Terry Innis and his brother-in-laws Bruce Innis and Harvey Wakelam. He is survived by his wife, Bernice, his sons Ken (Alisa) and Tim (Vanessa) and of course his very special grandchildren Kristen, Kerri and Max Nerbas. He is also survived by his sister, Viola Innis and her sons, Leroy (Marian), Mervyn (Audrey) and Robert (Karen), his sister-in-law Julie Nerbas and children Joanne (Murray) Goodman and Hilbert (Sheila). His brother Ben's children Larry (Carolyn) and Donalda (Frank) Hambleton, and many great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Joan Wakelam and her children Rob (Arlene), Terri-Lynn (Wes Brown) and Patti and their children.

The Funeral Service took place at Knox United Church on Friday, September 23, 2016 with Rev. Harvey Hurren officiating. Interment followed at the Brandon Cemetery.

At this time, the family would like to extend a very special "Thank you" to all the physicians, nurses and staff at the Assiniboine Centre who made Lloyd's last days very comfortable.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Lloyd may be made to the Knox United Church Memorial Fund, 451-18th St, Brandon, MB R7A 5A9, Westridge Community Centre, WEPO Box 21021, Brandon, MB R7B 3W8, or a charity of choice.
