Obituary for Frances Lee "Fran" Anderson

With her husband by her side, Frances Lee “Fran” Anderson, of the Forrest District, passed away at the Assiniboine Centre, Brandon on Friday, January 8, 2016. Fran grew up in Tinley Park, Illinois, near Chicago, obtaining a Degree from Northern Illinois University, with a double major in mathematics and Spanish. She immigrated to Canada in the early 70s and worked for over 20 years for the International Development Research Centre in Ottawa. She used her almost-fluent Spanish for business and pleasure, as the opportunity arose, throughout the rest of her life. In her post-retirement years, she was a long-time volunteer for the Brandon Film Festival Inc/Evans Theatre in Brandon, and did various volunteer assignments over the years for Westman Immigrant Services. She looked forward to travel, usually involving family reunifications with their widespread family. During her retirement years, she was also able to take several vacations with her husband to Mexico, Uruguay, Thailand, Florida, Greece, Arizona and her beloved Barbados, where they had lived for a number of years. Fran will probably be best remembered for her smile and her legendary generosity. She loved to be a hostess, providing fine food and wine to her many guests over the decades. We would like to express deep gratitude to her many friends from far and wide, who have been supportive of Fran during the difficult final months. We are grateful to her physician, Dr. G. Edward and to the outstanding, compassionate staff at the Palliative Care Unit, Assiniboine Centre, who did their utmost to keep her comfortable in the final weeks. Fran is survived by husband Bill; sons Erik Stephen Haines, Sean (Faith) Anderson, and Vaughn (Nina) Anderson; mother-in-law Elizabeth “Bessie” Anderson of Riverheights Terrace; sisters Kay (Robert) Goers and Laurie (Kevin) O’Shea; sisters-in-law Bonnie (Gerry) Anderson, Margaret Anderson, Shirley (Mike) Anderson; and her grandchildren Liam (11), Aidan (9) and Amy (7). The family will cherish her memory in a private graveside ceremony at Humesville Cemetery in the spring. Donations in memory of Fran may be made to Dying with Dignity Canada, 55 Eglinton Ave. E Suite 802, Toronto, ON, M4P 1G8, www.dyingwithdignity.ca or the Brandon Film Festival Inc, 455-8th St., Brandon MB R7A 3X6.
