Obituary for Anne Neufeld

Anne Neufeld
NEUFELD: Annie "Anne" Dora. 1913 - 2015. On March 27, 2015, Anne Neufeld of Brandon went to join her husband, Walter, in their Heavenly Home. Left to mourn her passing are Anne's daughter Gail and son-in-law Ernie Tayler; their three children and four grandchildren: Beverlee and Jack Haverstock of Brandon, daughters Nicki currently in Grand Forks, N.D., and Jenna of Brandon; Brenda and Darrell Appelt of Brandon, their son Trevor and his wife Kim of Morden and daughter Kim Lamb and husband Bob of Brandon; and Jim Tayler of Winnipeg; Anne's son Chuck Neufeld and wife Yvonne, Chuck's son Sean and Yvonne's daughter Amanda, all of Winnipeg; Anne's son Gerry Neufeld and wife Kaye, their son Jake and his wife Maddi, all of Colorado, USA. Many nieces and nephews from the Neufeld and Pazarena families also survive. Anne was predeceased by her husband Walter in 1999, her father Fred, mother Annie, sisters Olga, Victoria, and infant Mary, and brothers Jim, Emil, and Nick. Born Annie Dora Pazarena in Plum Coulee, Manitoba in 1913, she was the second child born to Annie and Fred Pazarena. Of the twelve children, only six lived to adults. It was not an easy life for the family. Fred died at forty-one years of age, leaving seven children. As the eldest daughter, Anne assumed many responsibilities. Her mother had no outside means of support and was needed at home to care for the seven children. Young Anne had to work away from home, when not in school, to bring in extra money by doing housework for a family and in later years, worked in a restaurant. The family always had a big garden, a cow, and chickens and Anne remembered well, how her mother fed the children. Though a poor family, they were never hungry. Their mother always found time to play with her children, especially baseball. They often made ice cream in the summer. The family were great card players and maintained their competitive spirit into adulthood. After dinner the table would be cleared and the cards came out - whoever lost would do the dinner clean-up. No one wanted to lose! Anne was offered work in Gretna at a cafe/telephone exchange business owned by the Neufeld family. After Anne's mother approved of her living and working conditions, Anne accepted the job in Gretna. Soon there was an attraction between Anne and the handsome blond son of the owner! Love blossomed and they were married in Winnipeg on September 27, 1933 and enjoyed sixty-five years together before Walter died at age ninety years in 1999. Anne and Walter lived in Gretna until they moved to Winnipeg in 1948. Anne lived in the house they had built for them until moving to Brandon in April 2002. It was very difficult for Anne to leave her home of many years, her church, and her many cherished friends. Anne's Brandon family wanted her to live at River Heights Terrace. Her first impression of the Terrace was that she couldn't live there because "it's too grand for me". Well, fortunately she was persuaded and it became home to her. Anne enjoyed her life there. Unfortunately in 2013, a fall sent Anne to hospital where she stayed until moving to Rideau Park Personal Care Home in November 2013. Anne's faith was important to her and she lived her faith. She like card games, Cribbage, Tile Rummy, and Scrabble. In her last years, Scrabble became her focus and couldn't get enough of the game. Anne could be seen, daily, reading her two favourite books - her Bible and the Scrabble Dictionary! A great gardener, lover of flowers, a good cook, she was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and loyal friend who put her family and friends before herself. Anne will be missed in everyone's life. A Service of Remembrance was held at Memories Chapel on Wednesday, April 1, 2015. At a later date, the family will say their final farewells at a private graveside service in the family plot at the Gretna Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com.
