Obituary for John Nicholas Urichen

John Nicholas  Urichen
URICHEN: John Urichen, age 83 years, passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Wednesday, February 11, 2015. John was born in Saskatchewan in 1931, the second eldest of a family of seven. He was raised on a mixed farm north of Dauphin. After John left home in 1951 to attend teacher's college in Winnipeg, he taught in several country schools in the Dauphin area. John met Irene Nannan and they married in 1972. After teaching for thirty-six years, John decided to end his career to take care of Irene full time until she lost her battle with cancer in 1990. Then John met and married Ann Chandler in 1992 and he got a new dimension to his life - kids and grandkids. John and Ann had many wonderful trips and cruises to various parts of the world. They wintered for twenty-three years in Mesa, Arizona In 2006, John and Ann moved from Russell to an apartment in Brandon. Last summer they decided to sell their place down south and they moved into assisted living in Brandon where they enjoyed the various activities and each other's company. John was predeceased by his first wife Irene; parents Nick and Olga and brothers William, Alex and Walter. He is survived by his wife Ann; step-children Janice (Les) Dewar, Lorna Gemmill, Robert (Candace) Chandler and John (Jane) Chandler; grandchildren Jocelyn (Matt) Lehotsky and their children Heidi and Jeremy; Jacqueline Dewar, Chandler and Brittney Gemmill, Troy Chandler, Austin and Amy Chandler. John is also survived by his sisters Elsie (John Bordyniuk), Luba (Lawrence) Safronetz, Emily (Leonard) Yakielashek and sister-in-law Lil Urichen. The Celebration of John's Life took place at McDiarmid Drive Alliance Church on Saturday, February 14, 2015 with Pastor Dan Pope officiating. Committal took place at Riverside Cemetery, Dauphin (prior to the service) with Fr. Oleg Bodnarski presiding. If friends so desire, donations in memory of John may be made to Parkinson Society of Manitoba, 208 - 1011 Rosser Avenue, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 0L5.
