Obituary for Peggy Vallance

Peggy Vallance
VALLANCE: It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Joyce Margaret Rosalind “Peggy” Vallance. Born in Napinka, Manitoba on October 23, 1928, Peggy grew up in Napinka and received her education at Napinka school. She was a tomboy and loved sports of all kinds which she often preferred to her school studies. In her late teens, Peggy moved to Brandon where she started her working life. She worked various places, among them Yaegers Furs and the Brandon General Hospital. It was during this time that she met and married the love of her life Richard “Dick” Vallance and started a family. They moved to Ottawa, Ontario in the late 1950s so Dick could take a job on the Canadian National Railway. Ottawa became their home for the next 18 years. While in Ottawa Peggy made many new friends and enjoyed an active social life, especially at the local curling club. Although she stayed busy raising her young family, working fulltime at a seed store and of course curling, she missed the prairie life and longed to return to her Manitoba. Needless to say she was very happy when they moved back to Brandon in 1979. Once back in Brandon, Peggy was reinstated as a Legion member at Branch No. 3 in 1980. She served on many committees and was in charge of the Ways and Means for four years. In 1984, she received the Certificate of Merit for all her hard work. Peggy also worked for the Shriners Club because she said she loved to hear the bagpipes when they practiced. Mostly, it was because she loved working for the people and the Shriners, many of whom became dear friends. Most importantly, Peggy wanted to repay the Shriners in a small way with gratitude for the wonderful care Carol received as a child at the Shriners Hospital for Sick Children in Montreal. Peggy also worked hard at other things such as knitting, cooking and sewing. She was an excellent seamstress and turned up many a hem, as well as making all kinds of clothing for people from pants to bridal gowns. After retiring from the working world, she took up the sport that became her passion, golfing. She loved the Glen Lea Golf Club and was there every chance she could find. Peggy loved children, admired and respected her friends, both old and new, and mostly she loved her family. She loved her home and taking care of her flowers and her yard. Peggy is survived by her daughter Patricia Rawlinson, son Richard Vallance (Lorrie), granddaughter Jennifer Vallance and son-in-law Neil Cowe. Peggy was predeceased by her parents, husband Richard “Dick” Vallance, daughter Carol Cowe, son Ricky in infancy, and son-in-law William Rawlinson. She will be missed by so many friends and loved ones. A Celebration of Peggy’s Life took place at Memories Chapel on Tuesday, January 28, 2014. Fr. Chad McCharles officiated. Interment followed at the Brandon Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Peggy may be made to the Brandon Shrine Club, 1110 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 7B8.
